What Is the CITB Health and Safety Test?

The CITB Health and Safety Test, known in full as the Health, Safety and Environment Test, is the exam CSCS asks for before it will issue a card. Most labourers sit the CITB Operatives test, which covers the core knowledge everyone needs on site.

The paper lasts 45 minutes and holds 50 multiple-choice questions. To pass, you need at least 45 out of 50, which is 90 percent. Questions cover legal duties, health and welfare, general safety, high-risk activities, environment, and specialist areas relevant to the role.

If you already hold the Level 1 qualification, the CITB test for operatives is the only step left between you and your card.

Do You Need the CITB Test for Your CSCS Card?

The CITB test for CSCS card applications is compulsory, whichever card you are going for. Book the test on its own if:

  • You already hold Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction Environment
  • Your previous test result has expired, and the card renewal has stalled
  • Your employer needs proof of a valid pass before your start date
